ROY DANIEL
Born in India in 1964, Roy Thomas Daniel graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the State of Kerala, India (1989) and specialist in neurosurgery Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, India (1997). He then benefited from three years of Fellowships in neurosurgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (Australia, 2001-2002) and the University Hospital of Lausanne (2002-2004). Returning to India in 2004, he joined the CMC Vellore as associate professor of neurosurgery, before being appointed full professor in 2006. From 2009, Roy Thomas Daniel joined the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at CHUV as Professor and Vice Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Lausanne His domains of clinical responsibilities include surgery of the skull base, vascular surgery and pediatric neurosurgery. Pr. Daniel has extensive experience in the surgical treatment of benign tumors of the skull base such as vestibular schwannomas, meningiomas and pituitary adenomas. In close collaboration with the teams of ENT, he has developed non-invasive endoscopic surgery techniques of the skull base in addition to combined approaches for tumors of the skull base that combine microsurgery (trans-cranial and / or trans-nasal) and Gamma Knife. These have significantly reduced postoperative morbidity for these difficult tumors. Pioneer in pediatric epilepsy surgery, Roy Thomas Daniel has also developed a new technique of intervention that is based on disconnections for hemispheric and sub-hemispheric epilepsy. This method is currently referenced in the largest epilepsy surgery centers in the world. In the emerging field of realignment of the craniovertebral junction, he has developed a surgical technique with creation of new implants and instruments in collaboration with an American team. Furthermore, Roy Thomas Daniel has several clinical research projects underway in the areas of surgery skull base and vascular neurosurgery, both at Swiss and European levels as well as through international multi-center research projects . In terms of basic research, Roy Thomas Daniel is working in particular with the laboratory of Prof. Ron Stoop Psychiatric Neuroscience Centre, University Hospital of Lausanne on the neurobiology of epilepsy, stress and anxiety disorders linked to the amygdala and hippocampus. This work, carried out in vitro and in vivo rat models, aim to try to understand the precise mechanisms of these disorders and ultimately to define new treatment modalities. The researcher is coordinating this effort between the laboratories in India and Lausanne and has received several grants from the Indian and Swiss governments.
